How to Store Your Electric Golf Trolley Battery for a Canadian Winter

Five months in a cold garage can quietly kill a lithium battery. Here's how to put your electric trolley away so it's ready on opening day.

The golf season in most of Canada ends in October or November, and the trolley goes into the garage until April. How you store the lithium battery over those months decides whether it starts next season at full strength or with noticeably less range.

Always follow your trolley's manual first. The steps below are general best practice for lithium (including LiFePO4) golf trolley batteries.

Why winter is hard on lithium batteries

Lithium batteries slowly self-discharge in storage. If one sits empty for months, it can drop below the safe minimum voltage and the battery management system may lock it out. Cold isn't the main enemy of a stored battery. The two real problems are charging it while it's below freezing, which can permanently damage lithium cells, and for months.

storing it fully charged or fully empty

Step-by-step: storing your trolley battery

  1. Charge to partial, not full. Bring the battery to roughly 50% to 70% charge before storage. That's the sweet spot for long-term health.
  2. Disconnect and remove it. Take the battery off the trolley. On the Volt Caddy Pro-S the battery and power unit detach, which makes this easy.
  3. Store it indoors, cool and dry. A basement or closet is better than an unheated garage or shed. Keep it away from heaters, direct sun, and damp floors.
  4. Don't leave it on the charger all winter unless your manufacturer says the charger supports maintenance mode.
  5. Check it every 1 to 2 months. If the charge has dropped noticeably, top it back up to around half.
  6. Never charge a cold battery. If it's been somewhere below 0°C, let it reach room temperature for several hours before charging.

Don't forget the trolley itself

  • Clean it. Wipe off grass, mud, and sand, especially around wheels, axles, and the fold mechanism.
  • Dry it fully before storage to prevent corrosion on connectors.
  • Check the wheels and anti-tip wheel. Replace worn parts now so you're not waiting in spring. Motocaddy owners can grab a 28V M-Series anti-tip wheel.
  • Store the handset with its battery removed if it uses replaceable cells.
  • Fold it and cover it to keep dust out of the motor and electronics.

What about the Volt Caddy's cold-weather rating?

The Pro-S LiFePO4 pack is specified for −20°C to 60°C, so cold shoulder-season rounds are fine. That rating covers use. For months of storage, indoors at partial charge is still best, and charging should always happen above freezing. Volt Caddy lithium batteries include a 2-year warranty (terms apply). See our warranty page.

Spring start-up checklist

  1. Bring the battery to room temperature, then fully charge it. The Pro-S charges in under 4 hours.
  2. Inspect connectors for dust or corrosion and clean them gently.
  3. Pair or test the remote handset and replace its batteries if needed.
  4. Do a short test in the driveway: forward, stop, brake, and remote range.
  5. Play a short round before a long one to confirm the range is normal.

When to replace a trolley battery

If a fully charged battery no longer gets you through 18 holes on your usual course, or it won't hold charge between rounds, it's time to look at a replacement or an upgrade. Shopping for a new cart for next season? Start with our 2026 electric golf push cart buyer's guide.

Frequently asked questions

Should I store my golf trolley battery fully charged?+

No. For long-term storage, lithium batteries do best at roughly 50% to 70% charge. Top up every 1 to 2 months if the charge drops.

Can I leave my golf trolley battery in a cold garage over winter?+

It's better stored indoors, somewhere cool and dry. If it has been below freezing, let it warm to room temperature before charging, because charging lithium cells below 0°C can damage them.

Can I leave the battery on the charger all winter?+

Only if your manufacturer states the charger supports long-term maintenance. Otherwise unplug it and top it up periodically.

Can I golf with an electric trolley in cold weather?+

Yes. The Volt Caddy Pro-S battery is specified for −20°C to 60°C. Expect slightly less range on cold days, and charge indoors after the round.
