Walking 18 Holes With an Electric Trolley: Benefits, Myths, and Tips

Walking is better for your body and often your score, and an electric trolley takes out the hard part. Here's what changes when you ditch the power cart.

Riding a power cart feels easy, but it's a stop-start round: jump in, drive to the wrong ball, walk back for a club. Walking keeps you moving, keeps you loose, and puts you in rhythm with the course. An electric golf trolley removes the one real downside: pushing or carrying your bag for 8+ km.

The benefits of walking with an electric trolley

Real exercise without the fatigue

An 18-hole walk usually covers roughly 8 to 10 km and well over 10,000 steps, depending on the layout. That's meaningful cardio. The weight you skip is just as important: a full bag on your shoulder, or a pushcart up every hill, is what leaves your legs and back tired by the 14th. With the motor doing the pushing, you get the walk without the load.

Better focus and course management

Walking up to your ball gives you time to read the lie, check the wind, and plan the next shot. You arrive at the ball with your clubs beside you instead of guessing at the cart path and jogging back.

Lower cost per round

Power-cart rental adds up across a season. An electric trolley is a one-time purchase, and many courses let you walk with your own trolley at no extra charge (check your course's policy).

Pace of play

Walkers with a trolley go straight to their own ball, and on cart-path-only days they're often faster than riders. A remote cart like the Volt Caddy Pro-S can be sent ahead to the next tee while you putt out.

Myths about electric golf trolleys

  • “They're only for older golfers.” Plenty of competitive amateurs walk with electric trolleys to save their legs for the back nine.
  • “The battery won't last 18 holes.” Modern lithium packs are rated well past 18. The Pro-S is rated for up to 36 holes per charge under normal play.
  • “They're too heavy to get in the car.” Detachable batteries and one-step folds make modern trolleys manageable. Lift the frame and battery separately.
  • “They're complicated.” A push-button model like the Motocaddy M1 DHC is one dial and a fold.

Tips for your first round with an electric trolley

  1. Charge the night before. Lithium batteries don't need a full drain first. Top up after every round.
  2. Balance the bag. Strap it tight top and bottom so it doesn't shift on side slopes.
  3. Use distance cruise. On the Pro-S, programmed distance sends the cart 15 to 30 yards ahead.
  4. Park on the path to the next tee. Leave the trolley between the green and the next tee, never on the green or fringe.
  5. Slow down on steep descents. Downhill speed control helps, but walk it by the handle on the steepest slopes.
  6. Pack the extras. Drink, scorecard, and umbrella holders are what make a walking round comfortable. The Pro-S includes them, and Motocaddy owners can add the Essential Accessory Pack.

Frequently asked questions

How far do you walk in 18 holes of golf?+

Typically about 8 to 10 km, depending on the course layout and how far apart greens and tees are.

Is walking golf with an electric trolley good exercise?+

Yes. You still walk the full distance and get the cardio benefit, while the trolley carries the bag weight that causes back and leg fatigue.

Can I bring my own electric trolley to any golf course?+

Most courses allow electric trolleys. Some restrict them on very wet days or require them to stay off certain areas. Check with the pro shop.
